Genre

This Prezi shows all the sub genres of horror, as well as their forms and conventions and an analysis of a trailer for each.

The most popular film genres of all time
According to imdb(http://www.imdb.com/genre/), action is the most popular genre of film, followed by Adventure, animation and biography. The first three genres are often similar and many films can fit into all of these categories.
Some of the most successful films ever made (like Avatar and The Avengers) have action and adventure; which could be the reason why these genres are considered to be the most mainstream.
They seem to be the most common genres at the moment, which many highly anticipated action/animation movies being released right now. These include; Finding Dory, Suicide squad and Independence Day: Resurgence.
According to a web forum (source: https://essayforum.com/writing/people-love-watching-action-movies-formal-10155/) people enjoyed action films because of their exhilarating thrill, awe inspiring special effects and to escape from the dullness of reality. Most action movies have a super-human hero to idolise and root for. Heroes such as Rambo, The terminator and Jackie Chan, are ones that people of all ages can look up to.
Adventure movies have similar elements; thrill, heroes and escapism.
Animation movies (like Disney movies) are popular because they appeal to a large segment of the popular; children. In 2013, the movie 'Frozen' grossed a $1.3billion box office, making it one of the most successful films ever made. Although they are targeted at kids, families (including teens and adults) will also watch these films for their enjoyment and for the sake of childhood nostalgia.
The reason biography films are near the top of the list is because they attract the fanbase of the celebrity who is being portrayed. Many films based on the likes of the late Steve Jobs and Michael Jackson have gotten many sales.
Comedy films are also popular because most of the time, people want to watch something entertaining and light-hearted, not dark and heavy. They are suitable for family and romantic nights in or simply to kill time in a fun way.
History, musicals, science fiction and sport films are among the least popular genres because they appeal to a niche audience instead of a mainstream one. Only people who like these topics (which is a few people) will be interested in these films.
I was surprised that thriller films were so low down on the list because this is the main component of an action/adventure film, which many people said they enjoy. I think that the reason for this is because 'thriller films' can mean anything to horror thrillers, crime thrillers and action thrillers. Thrill can be found in many genres; it is more of an element found inside a film rather than a genre of its own.
Understandably, horror was also a less popular genre. Many people are scared of horrors and don't like the nightmares, gore and morbid plots of them. On the other hand, people don't tend to watch horror films because they don't scare them and the plots tend to be cliché and overdone.
Romance films are stereotypically loved by women, which means they aren't watched by both sides of the population. However, it's not a genre that appeals to all women, which accounts for its small audience.

Chosen genre

I will be making a trailer for a horror movie, which will incorporate many of the stereotypical conventions within the genre; to make my trailer more recognisable as a horror. These will include; scary props (like masks and dummies), fake blood and gore, dark cinematography (like low key lighting and shadows) and creepy locations (like dark alleys). These may be cliché and overdone conventions, but if done right, I believe that they can still effectively scare the audience. The reason that these components are over-used is because they work well with the tension needed for a horror based storyline.
