Since the main character's goal is to figure out a way to get back to his old life; he needs a level head. A would be less likely to crack under extreme circumstances, which is an idea characteristic. He also needs to be intelligent and to have the physical ability to run away from predators.
Strong, independent females are often put in the lead for horror movies (such as Rachel in ‘The ring’ or Rose from Silent Hill). However, most horror movie producers use women as weak objects who scream a lot and can’t defend themselves against the enemy.
The clothing that my character will wear, will be casual outfits (like shirts, hoodies and jeans) with dark, washed out colours - like blue, black and grey. The style of these clothes will make him look realistic and again, make the male viewers relate to him.
I have decided to darken the lighting of my trailer, because colours like black, blue and grey would appeal to an audience of men. They would be less likely to go for a film with bright colours and warm lighting, since it isn't 'cool' looking.
My character won't have much dialogue in the trailer. One of the reasons for this is because boys aren't very talkative. I think that short sentences that get to the point are effective and don't lose the viewers interest.
Most of my trailer scenes will probably be shot outside, or at my house. I think that the house is a realistic setting for young adults and that the outside scenes might add a sense of survival and adventure (which appeals to boys). I might also add a party scene in my trailer. Partying is a main hobby for young adults, so this would interest them and make the story's events more plausible.
A lot of gory horror movies (such as final destination) are aimed at 15 year olds, because young horror fans are more de-sensitized to gore and putt off by disturbing, morbid content.
The average member of my target audience enjoys listening to exciting music that makes them feel 'pumped'. For example, drum and bass bands like pendulum or hardcore electronic bands like The Prodigy, appeal to them. If it doesn't ruin the creepy effect, I might include some music (with a heavy beat) at some point in my trailer. This might it seem cooler. Otherwise, I will just add in lots of sound effects, which will still heighten the viewer's senses.
In conclusion, I will try to make a more sophisticated video that doesn't insult the intelligence of the viewer, but rather brings some originality to the genre and hopefully intrigues them with a progressing storyline. My aim will be to make the scary aspects of my trailer more creepy than shocking. Most adult viewers find jump scares to be annoying and cheap. A slow, creepy atmosphere will fit with the psychological/paranoia themes.
